Mathematics
A child holds a single golden bead and calls it a unit. They hold ten and call it a bar. A hundred is a flat square. A thousand is a cube. The decimal system is not explained. It is carried, weighed, and counted by hand before it is ever written.

What your child actually does
A three-year-old traces the sandpaper numeral three with two fingers and says its name. A four-year-old lays out the golden beads: one unit, one ten-bar, one hundred-square, one thousand-cube, and builds the decimal hierarchy on a small mat. A five-year-old adds 3,427 and 2,152 with the stamp game, exchanging units for tens, tens for hundreds, and writing the answer in their own hand. The work moves from the concrete to the abstract, one exchange at a time.
From concrete to abstract
Montessori math never starts with symbols on paper. It starts with objects a child can hold. The number rods are red and blue, segmented into units a child counts by touching. The sandpaper numerals let a child trace the shape of a number before they try to write it. The spindle box teaches that zero means nothing, and that the quantity grows as the numeral grows. Only after the hand knows the quantity does the pencil take over. The abstract symbol arrives last, and it arrives already understood.

Why a four-year-old adds four digits
The golden bead material makes place value physical. A single bead is a unit. Ten beads strung on a wire are a ten-bar. Ten ten-bars wired into a flat square are a hundred. Ten hundreds stacked into a cube are a thousand. The child sees the size grow. They feel the weight increase. When they add 1,200 and 2,300, they carry the hundred-squares to a new mat and count them. The exchange comes naturally: ten unit-beads become one ten-bar. Four-digit addition is not a puzzle. It is a transaction the child performs with their hands.
The decimal system, made physical
The teen boards and ten boards teach the names of the numbers from eleven to ninety-nine. The child slots the beads into the boards and says the name aloud. The bead chains lay the linear sequence of numbers on the floor, and the child counts by twos, by fives, by tens, folding the chains back into squares and cubes. The stamp game replaces the beads with small tiles stamped with 1, 10, 100, 1,000. The quantities shrink, but the hierarchy holds. The child is one step closer to doing math on paper, and they got there by handling the real thing first.
